The Melanin Market stands at the intersection of historic preservation and economic empowerment, serving as a cornerstone for revitalizing Jacksonville’s Historic Eastside. Our mission is deeply rooted in preserving the rich heritage of a community that has produced cultural icons and entrepreneurial trailblazers for generations.

Founded in February 2017 during Black History Month, the Melanin Market was born out of a vision to address unmet needs. Co-founders Dawn Curling, a 4th-generation entrepreneur and community organizer, and Angie Nixon, a 3rd-generation Northside Community Organizer, were inspired to “do right what they did wrong.” Recognizing the missed opportunity to stimulate local businesses in the marketplace, they activated a model designed to make a direct and lasting impact. Seven years later, that model has flourished, bringing thousands of visitors to the Eastside and fostering both commerce and cultural celebration.

Our journey is a testament to the power of blending historical preservation with economic revitalization. The Eastside community, rich in history and culture, continues to inspire us. This year, we have made significant strides in preserving that legacy, ensuring the stories of our ancestors live on while creating new opportunities for growth. Through meaningful partnerships, including those with the Melanin Collaborative and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, we have amplified the narratives of our heritage while driving sustainable development.

The economic impact of the Melanin Market is undeniable. From thriving small businesses to emerging startups, our monthly markets, festivals, and workshops have become a vital resource for Black entrepreneurs, families, and creatives. These efforts have ignited a wave of pride and prosperity within the Eastside community.
