Hi, my name is Julia. I'm 36 years old and I've been with East House for eight years. Life has its ups and downs and sometimes, you just need a little help along the way.

Moving from a group home to my own apartment was a big adjustment. At first, I felt alone. After meeting with my East House counselor a few times, things began to change. She encouraged me to meet some people in the building. I began to make friends and we started a coffee club – we’d make coffee in someone’s apartment, listen to music, and just talk for hours. It was really nice.

Eventually, I started to gain confidence and push myself. I liked having the privacy of my own space, and I began to do things that I never thought possible. After a few years, I moved onto the next step of independence—living in the community with support from East House. I was nervous, scared… I had a lot going on in my life. But my counselor was there to help—gently reminding me that I could do it.

At East House, I realized there is hope. Even if I feel unsure, just knowing someone out there has my back—and is with me every step of the way—makes all the difference.

You see, mental health and recovery are a part of me but it is not who I am. It is just a piece of the puzzle that makes up the mural of my life. Recovery is never a straight path. I have been through struggles and also seen brighter days but the trick is to keep moving forward.

Today, I feel a sense of freedom. I manage every part of my life on my own terms, in my own apartment. I am proud of myself. And I have East House to thank for that gift.
