Kelvin has been incarcerated for 11 years. His daughter is 17 now, but for most of her life they were apart. “She was taken from me at six months,” Kelvin explains. “I just got custody of her two years ago. Now I’m trying to make memories with her and let her know she has a dad that loves her.”
Since reconnecting, Kelvin and his daughter have been building a bond through calls and visits. “She’s a beautiful spirit,” he says. “We laugh, we talk, we joke. She inherited my spirit, and I’m glad to have that.”
The Father-Daughter Dance means everything to him. “This is the first and last time — she’ll age out soon. But we’re going to make the best of it and dance the night away.” For Kelvin, even putting on a suit feels significant: “So she can see me at my sharpest.” His faith has also grown stronger through these years. “You can’t put your hope in yourself or in the courts,” he says. “You’ve got to put your faith in something higher that will reunite us.”
