The Need with Stats:

Did you know that 40,000 people in Hamilton County are food insecure? Before the recent government shut down, the five community fridges that exist in our city averaged 5 to 6 families stopping by per hour, and typically serve about 50,000 people per year, per fridge. These days, the fridges are empty within an hour or two of being stocked. We clearly have not yet met the food needs of the city’s most vulnerable. We also don’t know how many people are going without in other areas that have never been served.

A lot of attention is rightfully given to the Chattanooga Food Bank, but they are not able to meet every person’s needs. The Chattanooga Pride Food Coalition is a group of 15 organizations that are collaborating to make sure we fill the spots that are missed by the food bank. Disabled folks, folks with food sensitivities and allergies, folks without transportation, and folks who need dietary supplements like Insure and PediaSure are good examples of those who need our help.

The Ask and CTA:

Our goal is to create a community pantry to accompany a fridge, so that non-perishable food items and dietary supplements are stocked in areas the food bank isn’t able to serve. We estimate the cost to build this pantry in one of these hotspots to be around $500. We'd also like to have $150 to spend on stocking the pantry at the outset as well.

With your help, the Chattanooga Moms for Social Justice Community Food Center will always be full! We’ll work with community partners and individuals to build it and to keep it as stocked as possible on an ongoing basis.

We know that things are difficult right now. Life is expensive, but to help our community we are simply asking for anything you can spare.
