Kaleidoscope: Metamorphosis
We're bringing something magical to the Sierra Foothills for Something Queer 2026, and we need your help!
The Vision
Kaleidoscope: Metamorphosis is a luminous portal designed to celebrate our collective resilience. Standing as a glowing beacon in the trees, the archway is an invitation to approach, reflect, and pass through.
Adorned with 100 hand-crafted glass Monarch butterflies, the portal honors our natural bodies and our place within the earth’s rhythm. The Monarch’s annual migration spans thousands of miles and requires four generations to complete, no single butterfly makes the journey alone. They rely entirely on the collective to survive. By passing through this portal, you step into that same lineage, emerging connected to our community and the ancestors who paved the way.
The Full Migration
This installation at Something Queer is more than a single moment; it is a foundational step toward a larger initiative to bring this "swarm" to even greater heights. This smaller-scale portal serves as a proof-of-concept for a massive, 20-foot-wide swarm of 500 butterflies planned for Black Rock City later this year. By supporting Metamorphosis now, you are helping us prototype the engineering and community-build processes required to realize a vision of even more radical scale and impact.
How you can Help
Building a portal takes a village (and a lot of glass!). Your contributions will go directly toward:
The Glass: Fusing 100 custom butterflies that can withstand the elements.
The Steel: A sturdy 8-foot-wide circular archway to serve as our physical threshold.
The Glow: High-tech, weather-proof LED lighting and power systems to keep the magic alive after dark.
