In 2014, Time Magazine featured a cover story titled “The Mindful Revolution,” that helped launch mindfulness meditation into the mainstream, lifting it from its traditional Buddhist roots and placing it squarely in the secular spotlight. Since then, mindfulness has become a household word and an essential component of many modern therapeutic approaches. But over a decade into this mindfulness revolution, it's time to expand the movement.

One powerful and often overlooked companion to mindfulness is mettā, or kindness meditation. It’s unfortunate that mettā hasn't received the same recognition, even as we face growing epidemics of isolation, loneliness, and divisiveness. Kindness meditation invites us to turn toward our experience with gentleness, ease, and care. By cultivating a heart that embraces rather than banishes, that connects rather than isolates, we awaken a sense of belonging and inner security.

Mettā is the heart’s natural inclination toward indiscriminate friendliness. It doesn’t wait for perfection or worthiness. This practice offers the courage to approach even our most difficult thoughts, emotions, and memories with tenderness.

Our Teachers:

Dave Smith:

For nearly 30 years, Dave Smith has held a practice rooted in the Insight Meditation (Vipassana) tradition. He was empowered to teach through the Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society. He is a certified teacher for Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) which is combines contemporary emotion based scientific research with contemplative practices and psychology drawn from Buddhism.

Dave teaches residential meditation retreats, weekly live dharma classes, online courses, and workshops. He has developed educational tools and resources, including mindfulness and emotional skills trainings, in both secular and Buddhist contexts. Dave also works with students 1:1 through his dharma mentoring program. Dave lives in rural Colorado with his wife and two sons.

Rev. Mikey Livid:

Mikey Livid (he/him) is a Buddhist teacher, author, and counselor. Mikey is the guiding teacher at Wild Heart Meditation Center in Nashville, TN. He regularly brings Buddhist meditation classes into addiction treatment centers, prisons, and a variety of settings. Mikey is the author of an upcoming book. Mikey is the co-host of the punk rock, mental health podcast Punks On Hope and is the singer for the punk band The Rip Taylors. Mikey is a Buddhist teacher who has been empowered to teach in both Theravada and Mahayana traditions through the authorization of Ven. Pannavati Bhikkhuni and Ven. Pannadipa Bhikkhu. Mikey also holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. He integrates these two worlds: the old school Buddhist teachings with new school psychology, in a way to help individuals free themselves from suffering of all kinds.
