The Front Street Gateway to Kiwanis Park is dilapidated. Crumbling sidewalks impede ADA access, and poorly managed, trampled vegetation is an eyesore. The Gateway lacks lighting that would improve safety and visibility, and the shrubs and trees are overgrown. We at the Kiwanis Club of Missoula think that the time for renovation is now! Our goal for the Kiwanis Park Gateway is to improve the entryway and flow by having a wide path constructed that meets ADA access criteria. With path construction, lighting can be installed and vegetation improved so that the Gateway is accessible, safe, and more attractive.
This park is among the most heavily used in the City of Missoula. Numerous organizations, schools, neighborhood, and city residents depend on this park and the gateway area. Because of its proximity to the University of Montana, the park is used as a corridor linkage to the river trails, other parks along the Clark Fork River, and between the University and downtown Missoula. Our vision is to help the city implement its adopted master plan for downtown parks, and it’s critical that the planning is done properly before any construction can begin. We’ve already completed the landscape design phase with Kent Watson & Associates. Our current project is to take the design and contract with an engineering firm to produce the final construction documents. These will make the project “shovel ready” and allow the city to rapidly perform these renovations.
