Support Injured Migratory Birds During Walk for Hawks

Every fall through spring, The Raptor Trust’s medical staff works tirelessly to treat the most severe injuries we see all year—many of which result from the dangers birds face during migration.

Walk for Hawks is our annual fundraising walk to support these wild birds as they journey along the Atlantic Flyway, one of North America's busiest migration routes. Participants set a goal and walk, run, bike, and/or hike during the week of October 4 through 12, to raise awareness and funds for the care of birds injured during the perilous fall migration season.

All proceeds from this event will go towards helping birds admitted to TRT with migration-related injuries:

Antibiotics to treat infections from open wounds
Splinting and other medical supplies for healing broken bones
Chelation therapy for lead poisoning from contaminated food sources
Food for patients' several months' stay at The Raptor Trust

Millions of birds travel hundreds or even thousands of miles between their breeding and wintering grounds every year. These incredible journeys, driven by changing seasons and food availability, often bring them through New Jersey. Unfortunately, this vital route is filled with hazards—particularly in urban areas where collisions with windows are common.

Treating a migratory bird can cost as little as $100 for a short stay, or thousands of dollars for more complex recoveries. Some patients cannot be released until the next spring, staying in our care throughout the winter.

Funds raised during Walk for Hawks directly support the care of these migration-related injuries—giving birds a second chance at survival and helping preserve the miracle of migration for future generations.
