Building on Resilience

The Battery has stood for centuries as a symbol of graceful resilience amidst the backdrop of an ever changing city. Every path, garden, and view is shaped by intention— an artful meeting of land, sea, and human care. That same philosophy guides our latest evolution: elevating the waterfront promenade to endure a changing climate, without sacrificing beauty.

The first phase of waterfront construction is nearly complete. Beginning early 2026, visitors will enjoy new granite steps and storm-resistant walkways, refinished sea rails, and reimagined gardens designed for salt tolerance and flood resiliency, all inspired by Piet Oudolf’s world-renowned vision.

Through construction and beyond, The Battery Conservancy maintains Playscape, SeaGlass Carousel, Urban Farms, Woodland Lawn, and Bosque and Labyrinth Gardens to welcome all who seek nature, whether from around the corner or around the world.
