Directed by Bradley Diuguid, LORCA EATS BULLETS focuses on a team of young WW II-era Russian women who, as new conscripts in the Soviet Army, become embroiled in the Battle of Stalingrad, a bloody conflict which was arguably the turning point of the entire Second World War. Fighting for their lives and their country, the women struggle to both survive the war and find love and connection in their horrifying and isolating circumstances. The production will be performed in the Seelig Theatre on the SUNY Sullivan campus and streamed live on YouTube. Performances will run from November 6-14, Wednesday through Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. There will be a special Veteran’s Day Talk after the performance on November 11. Tickets are a suggested donation of $10 to the SUNY Sullivan Theater Program and Performing Arts Club. For further information, contact Jessica López-Barkl at [email protected]. LORCA EATS BULLETS is one of several plays in SUNY Sullivan’s 2020-21 theater season to examine the impacts of literal or figurative world wars, either in microcosm or on a larger scale. The play’s name, LORCA EATS BULLETS, is a nod to Federico García Lorca, the acclaimed poet and playwright who was tragically assassinated by fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. Shortly before his death, Lorca said: “I will always be on the side of those who have nothing and who are not even allowed to enjoy the nothing they have in peace.” LORCA EATS BULLETS takes Lorca’s words to heart — presenting a complex and thought-provoking portrait of a group of women who may ‘have nothing’ but who still find a way to live. Playwright Bio: Nick López is an Adjunct Professor of Theater and Speech at SUNY Sullivan. He is an actor, director, designer, and cartoonist. He has performed and directed in New York, New Mexico, Washington State, and West Virginia. He has a BA in Theater from the University of New Mexico and an MFA in Performance from West Virginia University.
