About the Laguna Ocean Foundation
The Laguna Ocean Foundation is a model for community-based conservation. While our work is rooted in Laguna Beach, our methods serve as a blueprint for other coastal communities. We have demonstrated that small organizations can affect big change.
OUR IMPACT
Over the past 20 years, we have successfully:
-
Helped establish Marine Protected Areas along the Laguna Coast including Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve and Laguna Beach State Marine Conservation Area, and Laguna’s rocks and reefs as part of the California Coastal National Monument.
-
Spearheaded restoration of one of Southern California’s most important estuaries, the Aliso Creek Estuary.
-
Engaged in nearly 8,000 hours of tidepool education and protection, reaching over 130,000 community members and visitors.
-
Collaborated closely with beach-front commercial owners to protect key marine habitats and species.
-
Strengthened our understanding of Laguna’s coastal habitats, species, shorebirds to better manage wildlife and their habitats.
-
Mentored aspiring marine scientists, educators, and community organizers.
-
Promoted ocean awareness through community events.
