Lance Hanish was a proud “Papa” to his grandchildren who he loved very much. His grandson Norbert, who he nicknamed Norbie, died the day before he was born, and Papa was as heartbroken as we all were that devastatingly sad day July 12, 2005. As many of you may know, that painful experience was chronicled in the film “Return To Zero” that Sean Hanish wrote and directed. It is the first major film to talk about stillbirth and its impact on a family and community.

That movie inspired a movement which Kiley Hanish then harnessed to create Return To Zero: Hope. Since 2018, Return To Zero: Hope has walked alongside grieving parents and families, creating support groups, workshops, retreats, and provider education that foster connection, understanding, and hope after pregnancy and infant loss.

While Papa was 83 this year, Norbert would have been 20, and yet Papa never forgot him. To honor both of their legacies, our family is asking that any donations you may want to give in Lance’s honor go to the vibrant and important work that Return To Zero: Hope is providing each and every day to bereaved parents around the world.
