What is the movie about?
Any freshman writing teacher will say "write what you know". I always hated that advice. I wanted to
write and discover new things. I wanted to invent new worlds and go on a journey with the characters.
I wanted to be as surprised by the action as the characters. My autistic brain simply worked different
and I fought against this advice my entire career. I never wrote what I knew and reaped the rewards
of trying new things. But this film is personal.
I visited my cousin in Austin who had a 16 year old son. He was misunderstood. A beautiful mind.
Funny. Genius. Gifted. Perfect. I saw a sadness in him that I resonated with so I invited him to come
stay at my house 5 states away. I knew he would say no, but a few weeks after visiting I got a call
from his mom saying that my young cousin wanted to come stay with me for a week. From the second
he arrived to the second he left was the best week of my life. We talked about everything. Life. Death.
Love. Acceptance. Hurt. Anger. Resentment. I told him anything he wanted to do we would do. Shoot
guns? Done. Fly an airplane? Let's go. Sushi for dinner every single night? Sounds delicious. It was an
amazing week but after he left I made the mistake of not checking in on him. Two weeks after he left
my house he died by suicide. I sat down and wrote this script in 2 days. It surrounds a person
stuck in purgatory. He's alone. He's angry. He's confused. People pop into his world, process their
baggage, and transition to the great beyond just as soon as they appeared but he's stuck there.
Unable to transition. Then someone appears and doesn't leave.
Thru the course of the film both men help and challenge each other to process their emotions. Both
are stoically unemotional. The type of men that if their leg got cut off would shrug and try to ignore it.
Pitting these two men against each other where they have to work together will be one of the great
character films in cinema. I imagine my little cousin stuck there. Stuck in a world where he's searching
for a why, but why is the only question he can't answer. Id' give anything to be there with him. To help
him. This film is my ode to him. I hope this will help others process loss as well.
Can I make money back by investing?
Yes!! Financial stakes in the film start at the $25,000 investment mark. Below that amount your donation will be used to make the movie, but there is no way to make money on your donation. Also- donations are not tax deductible via give butter. We are aligned with the Gotham Group which DOES provide 501c3 donations to go toward our project and those donations are tax deductible, but all money given via the give butter platform are NOT tax deductible.
TONE
The filming location will be at a remote wilderness ranch near Las Vegas, NM. It will be very hard on the crew and myself to make low budget but that’s the only way the film will happen. By making it happen. The ranch was once the highest farm in America and the site of the Harvey Retreat which was a famous retreat in the early 1900's. Due to culture changes people no longer wanted to “rough it” on vacation so the ranch slowly died until it was brought back to life by some of my family members in the mid 1950's.
Since the property was burned down by the forest service during a “controlled” burn we will be forced to bring everything with us to the property. This will take a lot of financial resources but I found the crew that is up for the adventure.
The property itself has sweeping vistas, bubbling streams, wide open meadows and densely packed forests. Before the fire, it was heaven. Now it’s purgatory.
