Story

Psychologists of Color, Inc. presents Anti-Racist Therapy for Latinx Clients: Effective Integration of Culture and Class, an innovative workshop hosted and led by Dr. Henry "Enrique" Ortiz, Psy.D.

As we mourn alongside our clients the mass shootings of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and People of Color, we need to respond with greater clarity and effective methods that aim to help BIPOC clients heal while living in a socially unjust society. In this workshop, Dr. Henry "Enrique" Ortiz will share an anti-racist approach that can be integrated into a clinician's therapeutic work in order to effect deeper and more grounded therapy with Latinx clients who strive for psychological and functional growth.

Aside from the common Multicultural Mental Health class, we're trained as future therapists to engage in a white, middle-class treatment that is meant to help white, middle and upper-class clients. However, to work effectively with Latinx clients who are emerging from the working classes require a different lens and a different approach. In this workshop, Dr. Henry "Enrique" Ortiz will share rarely shared experiences that he and his fellow Latinx-Americans face and how to use an anti-racist approach that will make therapy most effective.

ABOUT DR. HENRY "ENRIQUE" ORTIZ, PSY.D.

Henry "Enrique" Ortiz, Psy.D. (he/him/él) is a trauma-informed, Latinx psychologist in Los Angeles, providing decolonized, anti-oppressive therapy to individuals, couples, and groups. He is passionate about working with fellow Latinx and BIPOC communities, yet also works with white-identified individuals who want to explore their unique identities.

Henry "Enrique" Ortiz, Psy.D. (he/him/él), is a Gestalt psychologist in Los Angeles. He weaves psychodynamic theory, mindfulness, and trauma-informed theories into his work, and specializes in providing de-colonized, anti-oppressive therapy to upwardly-mobile Latinos and other BIPOC communities. His passion about intersectionalities of race, color, and class informs his work in helping his clients address issues related to trauma, stress, anxiety, conflict, and upward mobility. He provides individual, couples, and group therapy in his private practice. As a proud Latino who grew up in a working-class family on the Eastside of Los Angeles, and a first-generation college student, Dr. Ortiz knows personally the struggles of crossing cultural and class boundaries to become a member of the middle class. His hard-fought journey allows him to deeply understand and safely navigate his client’s often unseen traumas and suffering. Dr. Ortiz is a board member of Psychologists of Color, Inc., the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles, and is a co-president of the Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles,
