Daniel and Caroline Ashmore Shuman, married in 1874, overcame enslavement in Liberty County, Georgia, endured unimaginable hardships, and shouldered the crushing weight of systemic oppression. They knew the power of knowledge and the value of land ownership. Against incredible odds, with divine guidance, they were able to buy land and pay off the mortgage, securing a foundation of independence and dignity for their family. They dreamed of a future where their children and grandchildren could grow through learning and live with dignity, confidence, and purpose. With resilience and faith, they planted seeds of hope. Their union marked the beginning of a family story rooted in strength and vision, one that would carry forward through Reconstruction, segregation, and beyond.
