Let’s Get Sequoyah & His Dogs a Safe Vehicle!

Many people knew long-time Burlington resident Sequoyah Peace by his given name Loyal Ploof. A few years ago, he chose new name to chart his own path without the link to the cycle of abuse and trauma that he associated with the name he shared with his late father. He opted to make a connection to his Native American ancestors.

Sequoyah and his mother Charlene spent over three years living in their car with their four rescued dogs, facing each day with resilience despite overwhelming challenges. Charlene passed away in February, leaving Sequoyah alone. Members of his small circle of support help him with meals, a place to shower, and sometimes a safe spot to sleep, but their situation remains precarious. Sequoyah, who has a traumatic brain injury, is only able to work by walking dogs. His limited income makes it impossible to secure stable housing on their own. With four dogs to care for on his own, Sequoyah cannot find rental housing. The next reasonable short-term step is a solid van large enough for himself and the dogs.

At least one solid, well-kept van for sale has been located in the $6000 range. Along with registration, license plates, insurance and the unknown expenses that are part of owning a used vehicle, the amount we are trying to raise with this effort will get Sequoyah out of the broken-down car in which he and the dogs are currently living.

Your help will provide Sequoyah with the stability and dignity he deserves, and one step closer to a brighter future. For decades Sequoyah showed up to serve our community by volunteering on political campaigns, coaching little league at Roosevelt Park and serving on the Burlington School Board. In his current dire situation, he needs support more than ever from those who are moved to help out. Please be as generous as possible. All funds received will go directly to Sequoyah.
