For centuries, Nicollet Island has been the place in the middle; the place to meet. The only inhabited island in North America’s largest river has played host to peace negotiations, formative discussions between city fathers of the original Twin Cities of St Anthony and Minneapolis, and celebrations welcoming visitors from across the world.

They all made their way across the rolling waters of the Mississippi to the shores of our Island seeking a connection with people of like mind and common interest. And people – Twin Cities residents and visitors alike – continue to make the journey every day.

Now we want to light their way.

The Light The Bridge Project is a community effort to do one simple thing: light the Merriam Street Bridge that connects the east bank of the Mississippi River to Nicollet Island.

The historic bridge has carried visitors across the Mississippi River for over 100 years. We want to honor the historical connections the Island and its bridge represents, enhance the natural beauty of the passage, and illuminate the path for a new century of travelers and connection-seekers.
