LIMINAL - Art • Architecture • Community • Legacy
Liminal sp inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Liminal Mission: We are a creative collective that explores loss, legacy and its deep connection with place. We pair artists with community groups to reclaim sites of community trauma for liberation. Our aim is to empower residents in creating pride in place, provide design training and mentorship for young people, and amplify neighborhood narratives often overlooked or forgotten. We believe stories shape spaces that can hold both grief and possibility.

Starting in 2022, Liminal was co-founded by Immanuel Oni, Dubravka Antić, and Mahboubeh Abbasgholizadeh. We began it's mission with an initiative to develop an alternative approach to memorials to gun violence working with a Bushwick New York community organizer and bereaved mother Natasha Christopher. The program was called Beyond Memorial - an art, spatial, and justice response to the invisible, yet palpable scars left in spaces of community trauma and loss. The goal was to build on this idea in multiple public spaces across the city and to aid in the healing process and reclaiming of space for families, like Natasha.

For several years, Liminal has expanded this mission to create spaces of legacy and agency across several sites of loss. These include burial grounds, mobile monuments on migration and labor, public housing and detention facilitates. Liminal has worked with artists, young people, descendants, and community partners to use art and design as tools for remembering, reclaiming, and reimagining place.

Your contribution helps Liminal continue this work to create opportunities for artists, young people, and communities to use art and design to preserve history, strengthen connections to place, and imagine more equitable futures. Your supports sustains us in making space for communities to tell their own stories, and shape the place where those stories live.
