Lisana: Sponsor An Animal Ambassador

Lisana is a Pacific Ring-necked Snake. She came to us in 2022 after having spent 5 years as a pet. Her previous home was able to get her eating pinky mice, which is a feat, as this species does not tend to do well in captivity. Our volunteers have worked hard to switch her over to frozen mice over the past year.  She has visited over 250 classrooms and meet thousands of students and community members in her years as an animal ambassador.

Ring-necked Snakes are one of the most common snake species in the Bay Area, however they aren't spotted often because of their small size and tendency to hide in the leaf litter. They have smooth scales and are usually a darkish olive green color on their backs although they can vary from brown to almost black and even have spots!

You’ll immediately notice the nice orange, coral or even yellow color on their belly and around their neck and if they feel threatened they put on quite a show by coiling their tail upside down to show you the bright orange underside, this is a warning to you that they taste bad and please leave them alone.
