The Dr. Lulu Merle Johnson Exhibit Project

The Dr. Lulu Merle Johnson Exhibit

Dr. Lulu Merle Johnson (1907–1995) holds a distinguished place in history as the first African American woman in Iowa to earn a Ph.D. Her scholarship advanced the study of African American history, while her teaching and mentorship empowered generations of students to pursue academic excellence.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is proud to honor Dr. Johnson’s enduring legacy through the creation of a commemorative statue and plaza on campus. This lasting tribute will recognize her historic achievements, celebrate her contributions to scholarship and education, and inspire future generations of students, faculty, and visitors.

We invite you to join us in supporting the Lulu Merle Johnson Statue and Plaza, ensuring that her remarkable life and legacy continue to be remembered and celebrated at the University of Iowa.
