Homes for Locals

Big Sky Community Housing Trust believes that everyone in our community deserves a safe, stable place to call home. The Housing Trust's goal is to tackle the fundamental need for shelter by reclaiming and developing new homes. We know the Big Sky community requires more affordable homes as the current shortage affects households at all income levels, from Montana teachers struggling with the lowest starting salaries in the country to doctors who need a subsidy to afford basic housing since the median-priced condo in Big Sky costs over $1 million.

The limited housing inventory in the Big Sky community makes it challenging for employees to find affordable housing near their workplaces and deters potential employees with specialized skills from relocating to the area. This leads to longer commutes, increased transportation expenses, congestion on Highway 191, and a high worker turnover rate. Living in constant uncertainty about lease renewals in a town with few vacancies and no safety net is stressful, especially for those with dependents, as the fear of possible homelessness looms every lease cycle. Ultimately, the housing shortage for the workforce inhibits economic growth, limits the community's potential, and impacts the mental well-being of employees.
