Lovebugs Rescue is committed to helping abandoned dogs in need - whether they were left in a shelter, dumped on the streets, or were surrendered by their former families. We open our hearts and our homes to these unwanted dogs and turn them into loving family members.

Once rescued, each of our dogs join their foster family in their home. They receive all basic vetting to include updating vaccines, deworming, flea treatment, microchip and spay & neuter. However, many of the dogs that come into our care need extra medical attention. Unfortunately, vet care is increasingly expensive, especially specialty care. We are committed to providing our dogs with the best veterinary care available to them. Your donation will go toward helping us save more lives and get them the vaccines, microchip, spay/neuter, and vet care they need. If you prefer, you are welcome to designate your donation go to some of our special needs dogs with larger medical bills, which you will see below. We are 100% donation based and are all volunteers. We cannot do this without your help. Please support us in continuing to make a difference, and help these animals in need.

A few examples of some of our medical cases:

Baxter:

Baxter came to us as a tiny puppy with a mom and 3 other littermates. Shortly after his arrival into our care he developed congestion. We had him on various antibiotics, but each time he stopped, he would get congested again. He ended up in the emergency care on several occasions with pneumonia. We ran a respiratory panel and various tests to see which medications would be best. When Baxter was about 10 weeks old he began seeing one of our internal medicine specialist. More tests were run, and then finally he was stable enough to go under for a CT scan. It turns out Baxter has a very rare congenital condition where the turbines in his nasal cavity were not fully developed. As a result, Baxter will need to continue antibiotics for life. We are continuing to work with his new family to make sure that he gets the best care possible for this condition. We covered all of his medical costs.

Basil:

Basil is a sweet young dog that came into our rescue after being dumped on the streets. Despite she is young, she got the short end of the stick when genetics were concerned. Basil has two high grade luxating patellas (both knees) and she has cataracts. We did the surgery for her first knee, she recovered and then was adopted. The next phase was her eyes, and we have been working with her owner and covering all of her specialty care costs. She was a candidate for cataract surgery in one of her eyes which we took care of. Next will be addressing her other knee. The eyes will be something that will need to be monitored for life with eye drops and specialty visits.

Bubbles:

Bubbles is a 10 year old Shih Tzu we rescued from the South LA City shelter. He was terribly lethargic and matted. We brought him in and ran labs to get a baseline and it turns out the Bubbles is diabetic. This means he will need insulin for the rest of his life. Because insulin was new to him, we had various vet visits and glucose monitoring to figure out what his maintenance dose would be. We have a wonderful foster who is taking wonderful care of our boy and he is feeling so much better and even doing the zoomies! We also ruled out Cushings disease through testing and have him seeing an eye specialist to monitor his eyes. These conditions come with diabetic dogs.

Harper:

Harper is a sweet girl that came into our rescue after living life on the streets. She joined her foster home and we noticed that her coat was dull and flakey and she was very recluse. One day she stopped eating and started coughing. We ran a respiratory panel only to find out that Harper was positive for distemper. She landed in the emergency twice in one month with pneumonia and needed critical care. We were able to manage her symptoms and finally she was able to join her forever home. We will continue to run respiratory panels for her every few months until she tests negative for distemper and is cleared.

Patsy:

Patsy is an adorable Maltese mix who is as sweet as they come. We noticed right away that Patsy had some issues going to the bathroom normally. After imaging and testing, our vet concluded that Patsy has a condition called Megacolon. This is a condition that will need lifelong management through various medications. We are happy to say that Patsy is going fabulous and is still looking for her forever family!

Tucker:

Tucker is one of many dogs that we have rescued from the shelter with a break or fracture. His leg was pretty severely infected along with bones being shattered. We spent 4 months working with our vet to help save his leg through casting, splints, antibiotics to clear the infection, surgery to shave down a portion of the bone. But we noticed things just weren't getting better for Tucker. So we consulted with a specialist and they recommended that his leg be amutated. He has since has surgery and is doing amazing.

These are just a few examples of many dogs that come through our rescue needing extra medical attention.
