For the nearly 400 children living in foster care in Prince George’s County, it often takes four years (twice the national average) to find a stable home. In those years, their Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) may well be the only source of comfort and safety they have. While attorneys are experts on the law, CASA volunteers are experts on the child and provide the long-term, best-interest advocacy that children in complex, frightening situations desperately need.

CASA/Prince George’s County volunteers serve for an average of 25 months, twice the 12-month required commitment, which speaks to volunteer satisfaction and the true connections CASA builds. This past year, dedicated CASA Volunteer Advocates remained steadfast, serving 147 children and achieving remarkable outcomes:

Youth Advocacy: Volunteers submitted over 241 to the courts and the courts accepted more than 90% of the volunteers’ recommendations for services.
Permanency: Courts accepted 100% of volunteer recommendations with 55 youth found lasting homes through reunification, adoption, guardianship, or successful emancipation.
Training: 371 hours of volunteer in-service hours completed.

We are also proud to support our older youth as they transition out of foster care through the following:

Fostering Opportunities Fund: Over $85,000 in emergency assistance.
Retired Magistrate Ann Sparrough Scholarship: Over $65,000 in scholarships for higher education.
Thrive Prince George's County: We are proud to have been selected by the Greater Washington Community Foundation to be its lead partner for their Guaranteed Basic Income pilot through which we are providing $800 per month for 50 young adults who aged out of foster care during the pandemic.
100% of young people we serve until the age of 21 are stably housed when they emancipate whereas national estimates for newly emancipated foster youth are as low as 14%.
