We opened Murphy's Kittens, Inc in 2019 to help ease the homeless population with the simple goal of
accepting and rehoming unwanted cats in St. John’s County.

Without assistance or any government support, we were suddenly thrust into the middle of a full-blown crisis as the pandemic caused most shelters to shutter their doors. By the middle of 2020, we were one of the only organizations remaining
open and the number of abandoned cats under our care soared beyond capacity.

Having outgrown the current facility, we expanded to a larger or more accessible location to help our
struggling neighbors with this emergent problem. In 2022, we collectively agreed that the only way to
stop the suffering and reduce the numbers of unwanted cats was to offer low-cost desexing services.
Sadly, while the need was obvious and our efforts lauded, the funding was sporadic and did not sustain
the new clinic. At this time, we have put the medical side on hold until we can garner the recourses to
try again.

It is difficult to explain to those outside of this arena how expensive and all-consuming the rescue of
cats can be in this environment. Way too few owners spay and neuter their pets while way too many
leave them behind when circumstances change. Over the last two years, we have absorbed hundreds of
animals in dire situations because no other groups would step in to help. It is also hard to impress on
the community that with each cat comes vet costs, food, lodging expenses and desexing bills.

At this time, we are desperately trying to expand our facility to comfortably house the over 80 residents;
most of which are not candidates for placement due to long-term health problems or trauma from years
of neglect. Murphy’s Kittens will continue to secure permanent homes where possible and provide the
most fulfilling life for those who will remain with us in perpetuity.

Our goal is to reimagine our clinic as a mobile unit that would allow the greatest penetration into our
underserved communities so we can all make life better for the cats and the folks who love and aid
them.
