Share the Magic
This time of year, is filled with magic. Books and stories have a way of bringing people together in surprising ways. The young readers in our virtual book club come from all over the region. One sixth grader, Amy, is homeschooled because she was bullied in school. “Our daughter is very shy to begin with and suffered a significant setback due to bullying in her school. It caused her to be afraid of talking and peer interactions. Since joining the book club we have seen her self-confidence bloom, social interactions increase, and love of reading take off.” Amy’s mom says, “She looks forward to Tuesdays when she can join a group where she feels accepted. The academic advancement that consistent reading has provided is just a bonus on top of the social growth this club provides. This club is something we will continue to make a priority for our family for years to come.” When she first joined the book club she was shy and didn’t share her thoughts readily, but in just a few months she has started chatting and sharing her ideas. Books have helped her to make connections and come out of her shell.
Young people, like Amy, are one of the many reasons we share books and stories. Do you remember the books that shaped your teenage years? Reading fictional stories during the teen years helps young people develop empathy, leads to self-discovery, and navigates big emotions.
