The Maine Afro Yoga Project was created from a simple belief: healing should be accessible, culturally welcoming, and rooted in community.

For many people—especially immigrants, refugees, and those navigating stress, isolation, trauma, or major life transitions—traditional wellness spaces can feel unfamiliar, expensive, or inaccessible. Too often, people carry their burdens alone.

The Maine Afro Yoga Project was created to change that.

Founded by immigrant community leader, yoga teacher, and cultural consultant Nuna Gleason, the project brings people together through movement, mindfulness, nature, and connection. We offer yoga classes, outdoor healing experiences, community gatherings, and learning circles that help people reconnect with themselves, each other, and the natural world around them.

What began as a small effort to create a welcoming space for healing has grown into a vibrant community where people can move their bodies, build friendships, explore Maine's outdoors, and find support without judgment.

Our programs are designed to remove barriers to wellness by offering free and low-cost opportunities for participation. Whether someone is stepping onto a yoga mat for the first time, joining a hike, attending a healing circle, or simply seeking connection, they are welcomed exactly as they are.

We believe healing happens not only in therapy offices or clinics, but also in community—through shared experiences, movement, laughter, nature, and belonging.
