6 Kittens Need Eye Surgery

Some days at the shelter stay with us forever.
This is one of those days.
Earlier this month, a litter of seven kittens was found living beneath someone’s house. On July 12, they came to Siskiyou Humane Society and later went into foster care. Everyone hoped they would recover.
Instead, they got worse.
By July 20, they needed emergency veterinary care. They were rushed to Mount Shasta Animal Hospital, where our worst fears were confirmed.
One kitten was so critically ill that the kindest gift we could give was a peaceful goodbye.
The remaining six kittens all had devastating damage to one or both eyes.
Three kittens need emergency eye removal surgery immediately to relieve severe pain.
The other three aren’t far behind. Their eyes have already collapsed and atrophied, are no longer viable, and will also need surgery as quickly as possible.
Our goal is to raise $3000 to give these kittens the care they need.

• Medications before and after surgery
• Ongoing treatment and supportive care as they recover from feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) and feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR)
• Follow-up veterinary care

Based on their clinical signs, the veterinary team at Mount Shasta Animal Hospital believes these kittens are suffering from feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), which has caused feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR). In severe cases, this virus can permanently damage the eyes despite treatment.
We can’t save their eyes.
But we can save them from a lifetime of pain.
