In Loving Memory of Mel

Our sweet Mel crossed over the rainbow bridge, leaving a mustang sized hole in our hearts.

Mel was one of a kind. A sweet, steady, and calm gelding, he had a way of connecting with everyone in his own special way. Those who knew Mel often describe him as gentle yet strong — a horse who brought comfort, confidence, and joy to countless riders at Kids & Horses.

Mel joined our herd in 2020, and since then he became an integral part of our adaptive riding lessons, therapy riding, and workshops. He wasn’t just a therapy partner — he was also a true companion to the other horses, always eager to play and bond with his herd.

But Mel’s story didn’t begin here. Before arriving at Kids & Horses, Mel lived in the rugged territory of Granite Mountain as a spirited, wild mustang. Adopted at age six, he needed extensive training and patience. One day, something shifted — Mel began to trust, to feel safe with humans, and from then on, he became the calm and dependable horse we all came to love.

Mel even carried his mustang spirit into greatness, proudly participating in the Washoe Valley Endurance Ride, a grueling 120-mile race — and he became the first mustang ever to finish.

Mel’s journey from wild mustang to beloved therapy horse is nothing short of inspiring. He gave his heart to every rider, volunteer, and horse who shared his path. To our loving Mel, you are dearly missed, but your legacy lives on in every lesson, every rider’s smile, and every life you touched.

This campaign is dedicated to honoring Mel’s memory and continuing the work he helped make possible.  When you donate, you are helping support our amazing therapy horses and all that it takes to make sure they are getting the best care possible so they can continue the life-changing work they do!
