Targeted Support for Families Affected by Hurricane Melissa
Hurricane Melissa did not just tear through buildings — it tore through the everyday stability and safety of thousands of families across Jamaica. Entire communities have been left without electricity, without dry shelter, and without the basic tools needed to navigate the difficult days ahead. While large organizations address broad logistics, there are immediate needs we can meet — right now.
Light. Shelter. The ability to stay connected.
We are launching a targeted relief effort focused on two essential, fast-impact items:
Provides dependable lighting at night where power is out.
Doubles as a phone charging power bank, allowing communication with family and emergency services.
Ideal for homes, shelters, first responders, community centers.
These lights mean:
A mother can check on her children at night.
A family can charge a phone to call for help.
An entire yard or room can have light after sunset.
Used to repair damaged roofs, protect belongings, and prevent further water damage.
Provides temporary shelter for displaced households and elders living alone.
Durable, reusable, and critical for rebuilding.
A tarp may not look heroic — but for a family whose roof is gone:
It becomes the difference between sleeping dry or soaked.
Between salvaging what’s left — or losing everything.
After the storm, night becomes even harder.
No electricity. Roads blocked. Phone lines down.
People are walking through dark nights, unsure and afraid.
We can change that — immediately.
This is simple. Direct. Life-stabilizing aid.
And every contribution goes straight to placing these supplies into the hands of families in need across the affected areas.
The Hurricane Melissa Light & Tarp Relief Campaign is organized by Wayne “Shorta” Lawson, Class of ’78, and powered by the Jamaica College Old Boys Association of New York (JCOBA-NY), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law
