Memorial Bench Fundraiser
**Exciting Progress—But Our Work Continues!
As of March 20, the memorial bench honoring the thousands of enslaved individuals interred at Nashville City Cemetery is fully funded and ordered. This polished, inscribed granite bench will serve as a lasting anchor to the memorial site, giving recognition to the thousands who rest in unmarked graves.
But we’re not done yet. We still need your support to create a dignified site—including a memorial garden, an interpretive marker, and other meaningful elements.
Photo: Section 30, the future home of the memorial, contains more enslaved burials than any other section of the cemetery. The precise location is yet to be determined.
Help us complete this important memorial—every donation makes a difference.**
Join the Nashville City Cemetery Association in creating a memorial bench to honor the approximately 6,000 enslaved individuals interred in Nashville City Cemetery. All but about ten—including Salley Acklen, whose marker is pictured—lie in unmarked graves. Their lives were shaped by unending labor and resilience. Please donate—your support will help recognize their dignity and spirit in the heart of Nashville.
