News from the GGRLC Board 📋

Happy Spring GGRLC Friends,

Spring has arrived in the Low Country, bringing its usual mix of beauty and renewal. For us at Grateful Goldens, this season also comes with a bittersweet reminder of the highs and lows we experience together as a community. Sadly, we recently said goodbye to Noah, our oldest permanent foster.

Noah wasn’t just any dog—he was remarkable. He had this quiet, loving nature that touched everyone he met. Losing him has left a hole in our hearts, but we’re so grateful for the years we were able to spend with him.

At the same time, we’ve opened our arms to Sunny, a 13-week-old puppy with a deformed front right leg. This little girl is pure sunshine—full of energy, curiosity, and determination. She’s already teaching us so much about resilience and finding joy in every moment. Sunny’s journey is just beginning, and we’re excited to see her grow and thrive.

Inside this newsletter, you’ll find more about Noah’s incredible story and the memories he leaves behind, as well as Sunny’s path forward.

Through heartbreak and hope, we’re reminded why we do what we do—and why your support means the world to us. Thank you for being with us every step of the way. Together, we continue to make a difference for amazing Goldens like Noah and Sunny.

Noah ~ A Celebration of a Golden Life Well Lived 💙 🐕🐾

On the evening of Saturday, March 1st, Noah, one of our beloved permanent fosters in the Golden Guardian Program began experiencing significant distress. After doing everything we could for him, we had to make the incredibly difficult decision to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈🕯

His foster family shared these cherished memories about Noah: "Noah’s prior owner was a widow who adopted him and he provided her with love and companionship for four years before she passed away. He was thirteen years old when we took him in as a permanent foster and he was just shy of his 16th birthday when he passed. At thirteen he was not interested in learning many new behaviors so he  managed to take charge of the day by training us to perform “tricks” for him.  These  included getting out of bed to feed him no later than 6:00 am, daily treats at 10:30 and 4:30, walking him rain or shine daily.  But his greatest moment came each morning when he would charge into the bedroom with a toy in his mouth to wake "mom" up.

When he first settled in with us he was full of energy and ready to play at any moment and would enjoy running and ball play with our other dog.   As the years passed he had health issues with his hips, eyesight and hearing that all slowed him down.  There were several instances where we were ready to have him put down, however he would suddenly rally and be up and chasing squirrels in the backyard.   He loved meeting people and would do his best to charm them.  At the same time he would challenge any dog, cat, chicken or that he met . He was a constant companion, often finding a place to get close to me and lay down to watch me.  In his later years he became quite affectionate, always looking for room on the couch, a blanket and some pampering."

Noah fought bravely over the past month, but this final illness proved too much for him to overcome. Despite this, he was surrounded by love and care in his final days. ❤

We are profoundly grateful to all of our wonderful GGRLC donors who make our mission possible, and especially to Noah's Golden Guardians whose generous contributions supported his medical care.

Sweet Noah will be dearly missed. Our hearts go out to his foster family, who gave him an abundance of love and care throughout his time with them.  Rest easy, dear Noah. 🌈❤️

Meet Sunny!

We received a call in January that would change the life of a little pup and everyone who came to know her. A breeder had a 13-week-old Golden Retriever pup, a beautiful girl he couldn’t place with a family because of a deformed front leg. Without hesitation, GGRLC opened our hearts and arms to this special puppy, Sunny—a perfect name for her bright spirit.

Sunny’s journey began with her first puppy exam and vaccines, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of her deformed limb. A full set of X-rays revealed the extent of her condition, and it was clear that Sunny’s care required the expertise of an orthopedic veterinary specialist. Determined to give this precious girl the life she deserved, we reached out to our trusted specialist for help.

The consultation brought a mix of emotions. The specialist carefully reviewed Sunny’s condition and X-rays, ultimately delivering wonderful news: Sunny didn’t need a prosthetic or amputation! Despite her deformity, she is physically strong and could thrive as a healthy “tripod”—a three-legged pup bursting with energy and joy. The relief and excitement felt by GGRLC and Sunny’s foster-to-adopt family, Marsha and Buck, were overwhelming.

Fast forward to today, Sunny is blossoming into a happy, beautiful Golden girl, bringing smiles to everyone she meets. Her new family absolutely adores her, saying, “Life with Sunny is amazing! She has adjusted easily, and we are loving every minute with her!” They’ve even shared heartwarming photos that speak volumes about Sunny’s incredible spirit and the love she now knows.

Sunny’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion. GGRLC is thrilled to watch her grow and will continue to share updates on this remarkable pup who reminds us all that love and care can light up even the darkest of moments.

GGRLC Tip 💡

Is your dog devouring his food like it’s his last meal? Golden Retrievers are notorious for eating too quickly, which can sometimes lead to vomiting. You can help slow your dog down by using a 'slow-feed' bowl. The Durapet Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl, medium size, holds up to 5 cups of food and is just one of many slow-feed bowls available on the market.

Also, remember to let your dog rest for at least an hour after eating to help prevent bloat, a serious condition that can be life-threatening.
