Dear Friend of NC Peace Action,
Its been 80 years since the US bombed Hiroshima on August 6th and then Nagasaki on Aug 9th, 1945 – allegedly to end World War II, though there is much debate among historians about that (*1). If you’ve seen pictures of the devastation in 1945 or been there, you cannot help but be moved by the devastation, but also the resilience of the people of Japan – especially the Hibakusha, the survivors of the nuclear bombings, who deservedly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024 (*2).
While the nuclear arsenals of the world are down from their peak in the Cold War, there are still thousands remaining in the hands of the nine nuclear weapons states, and most are hundreds or thousands of times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. And Congress and Trump want to spend more and more of our tax dollars on these weapons of mass destruction, while gutting human needs and environmental spending. It’s madness. We need to step back from the brink.
CLICK HERE TO ACT TODAY - Please write your U.S. Representative and Senators to urge them to co-sponsor H. Res. 317 and S.Res. 323, the Back from the Brink resolutions, both of which provide a framework to move toward a safer, nuclear weapons-free world.
-- AND/OR Call and/or Write your North Carolina Representatives directly:
Senator Tillis 202 224 6342 https://www.tillis.senate.gov/email-me for S.Res. 323
Senator Budd 202 224 3154 https://www.budd.senate.gov/contact/ for S.Res. 323
and https://www.ncleg.gov/findyourlegislators for H.Res. 317
These resolutions, supported by Peace Action and many other organizations, call for the global elimination of nuclear weapons and prudent steps on the path to get there. They need your urgent support today. Thank you.

Marking the solemn occasion on the rainy morning of August 6th in Chapel Hill, NC Peace Action Board Members supported, attended, and spoke as Peace Witnesses. Organized by the WILPF -Triangle Chapter to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, Erik and Libby Johnson led the ceremony, including the hanging of paper cranes and reading of names of and statements. https://ncpeaceaction.org/posts/uncategorized/hiroshima-commemoration-and-peace-witness/
