🏅Celebrating Marie Windfelder

By Joey Windfelder

If you’ve spent any time in Fishtown, chances are you know my grandmother, Marie Windfelder.

Recently, Marie was honored with the Moody Family PDAC Award for her engagement and support of the 26th District Police District Advisory Council. This local award honors community members, officers, or organizations that show exceptional engagement with and support for positive police community relations.

The Moody Family PDAC Award adds to the list of honors Marie has received in recognition of her service to the neighborhood and community. She was also recognized by Senator Tartaglione’s office and State Representative Danilo Burgos, and last month received an award from the Philadelphia Police Department Commissioner.

While these awards are a wonderful recognition of everything Marie has done for her community, to those of us who know her, showing up for others is simply who she is. When I think about my grandmother’s impact on Fishtown, I don’t think about the awards. I think about the everyday things.

I think about when I was little, and Marie babysat me from the time I was three months old until I was four. She would walk me all around Fishtown. We would go to the Rec, swim at her neighbor’s pool, and make our way around the neighborhood. She took me to Sulimay’s for my first haircut, and my grandfather still goes to Joe at Sulimay’s today. Everyone knew Marie, and because of her, everyone knew me too.

Today, you might know Marie from Milkcrate Cafe, from seeing her walking up and down Girard Avenue making her rounds, from an FNA community meeting, through her work with the 26th District PDAC, or simply from being a neighbor. She has a way of knowing everyone and making sure everyone knows her.

Marie has lived in Fishtown since 1971, after growing up in North Philadelphia. For more than 50 years, she has been an active part of this community.

She joined the Fishtown Neighbors Association in the late 1980s. Her children played soccer at the PAL in the late 1970s, and she was a den mother for my father’s Cub Scout troop. She worked in the kitchen at St. Mary’s Hospital in the early 1970s and later worked at Farmers Choice for 14 years.

My grandmother is the most selfless person I know. She is always thinking about how she can help someone else before herself. She is the grandmother of eight grandchildren, who she loves and spoils, but she has always treated Fishtown like an extension of her family.

Fishtown has changed a lot since 1971, but Marie has remained a constant. She has watched generations of families grow up here, raised her own family here, and continues to give her time and energy to the neighborhood she loves. She has spent more than five decades building relationships, helping people, showing up, and simply being there for her community.

Fishtown has been lucky to have her for more than 50 years, and I’m lucky to call her Grandma.
