Why are we renovating the Middle School?

Originally designed and scaled for far younger learners, the Stites Building is not an ideal learning environment for our Middle School students. The inherent challenges of Stites include an inflexible floor plan (one that limits different instructional models), a lack of group gathering space, inadequate classroom space for full integration of Sally Borden students, restroom sinks that are set at elementary school heights, and furniture that is 30 years old.

What will the renovation add to the Middle School environment?

To address these challenges, the renovation will take into account our curriculum as well as the unique needs of adolescent learners. It will entail:

The addition of one classroom
Redesign of existing classrooms (some with moveable walls)
Creation of a common area for student socializing
Flexible breakout space for faculty collaboration
Age-appropriate restrooms
Strategically re-sited office space for reinforcement of positive social norms
New furniture

When is the renovation going to happen?

Due to extraordinary early support by a group of leadership donors, combined with the support of our current families at FriendsFest, the Middle School renovation will begin in June 2023.
