Miss Major Griffin Legacy Home Initiative

Preserving Legacy. Creating Sanctuary.

Life Is Work is launching a historic initiative to transform the childhood home of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a legendary leader in the transgender liberation movement, into Chicago’s first transitional housing program for elder TLGBQIA+ people.

For decades, Miss Major has fought for dignity, justice, and survival for transgender communities, especially Black trans women. Yet many transgender elders today still face housing instability, discrimination, and isolation. This initiative is about more than preserving a historic home—it is about building a permanent community asset rooted in dignity, safety, and opportunity for TLGBQIA+ people in Chicago.

By anchoring this effort on Chicago’s South Side, Life Is Work is bridging past, present, and future, honoring those who paved the way while creating space for connection, healing, and growth.

This project preserves living history while creating a sanctuary where people can live with dignity, safety, and community.

To make this vision possible, Life Is Work is raising $850,000 to purchase the home, complete renovations, and offer programming.

Every gift helps build a space where those who carried the movement forward can finally rest, heal, and thrive.

This is more than a home. It is a commitment to community.
