The Mitte Cultural District was born from the vision of the Roy F. & Joann Cole Mitte Foundation, which helped restore Dean Porter Park in 1998 and laid the foundation for a thriving arts and cultural community. The late RJ Mitte, a beloved friend and passionate champion of the arts, helped carry this vision forward through his unwavering belief in Brownsville and the power of the arts to bring people together.

RJ believed that everyone deserved access to arts and culture. Through his leadership, generosity, and dedication, he helped advance the district's mission and played a meaningful role in achieving its official designation by the Texas Commission on the Arts in 2026.

Today, the Mitte Cultural District serves as a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors alike—celebrating our rich cultural heritage through live performances, art exhibits, educational programs, festivals, and community events that inspire creativity and connection.

As we honor RJ's legacy, we remain committed to carrying forward the vision he believed in so deeply—a community where the arts are accessible to all and where creativity, culture, and opportunity flourish for generations to come.

Your donation helps us continue this important work, support local artists, preserve our cultural heritage, and build upon the legacy of those who believed in the power of the arts to transform our community.
