The Momettes sprang to life in 2020, when a group of South Bay moms brought their kids to a socially distanced dance class in the park during Covid—and couldn’t resist joining the fun themselves! Soon, five moms who originally met through CrossFit were gathering on a driveway every week, taking dance classes together. What started as a joyful outlet—a chance to move, laugh, and claim a little time for themselves—quickly grew into something bigger.

Their first big idea? A surprise flash-mob–style performance at their annual Seaside Lights holiday gathering. It was such a hit that a tradition was born. Since then, the Momettes have grown from the original five to a lively crew of twelve. Each December, they reunite to learn a brand-new routine and light up the street with a festive performance at their holiday party.

This year marks their 5-year anniversary, and the Momettes wanted to celebrate by doing even more—by giving back. They’ve partnered with ThruGUIDANCE to help raise funds for Together We Dance, a new program that supports underserved youth in accessing meaningful dance experiences. Scholarship funds help ensure that finances never stand in the way of a child discovering the community, confidence, and joy that dance can bring.

Dance is for everyone, and the Momettes hope their Candy Cane Lane performance spreads holiday cheer while helping bridge the financial gap for young dancers who dream of learning the art. ThruGUIDANCE is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization in good standing that has been operating for over 14 years, where it works to destroy barriers of poverty and cycles of violence in underserved communities. ThruGUIDANCE is a black female-led and founded organization by Kendal R. Troutman in 2011. We provide quality education and recreational activities through various programs/projects that support the personal growth of youth and social development of underserved communities.

Our mission is to offer young people, in vibrant yet under-resourced environments, access to ice sports and academic assistance while cultivating community pride and belonging. We provide one program, 24° of Color: A Diversity Ice Skating Program, and a mission project, Rwanda for Education both of which are rooted in a commitment to community collaboration and promoting positive change for young people in high-need communities. We work thoughtfully to provide loving, positive environments for young people to express their individuality through the holistic development of healthy minds, bodies, and spirits.
