MOTHERHOOD is a dramatic short film—and proof of concept— about bodily autonomy, trans rights, and parenthood.

We follow Nicki (played by Quei Tann), a trans woman navigating a groundbreaking uterine transplant trial. But what should be a joyful experience becomes a fight for her voice, her body, and her future—against both her family and the medical system.

The Story

NICKI is one of the first trans women to carry a baby to term as part of a groundbreaking uterine transplant trial.
Just hours before her scheduled C-section, her water breaks—something the doctors said couldn’t happen.

Her physician urges her to stick to protocol, warning that the outcome of her birth could impact access for future trans patients. Her husband, BENNY, and her father, AL, beg her to comply.
But Nicki chooses to follow her instinct and pursue a natural birth at home. She’ll give birth on her terms.

Why this story and Why Now?

In a time when legislation against queer people and women’s bodies strip more and more of our rights away, Motherhood is a story that dares to fight a medical system that falls short of our needs, and ignores our pleas. It’s a story that dares to reclaim women’s right to control our own bodies. It’s a story that dares to imagine a world where trans women are just like anyone else.

Bringing Hope to the World

We are looking to release the project widely via film festivals, with a focus of building a PR momentum that helps us get the film out. We are going to attend the film festivals and spread the film locally.

We are fortunate to partner with organizations such as The Q26 to help spread the word about the film. We hope to share the film with the help of other non-profit organizations who want to help spread hope. And finally we will release it freely on the internet so that anyone can find this film. With your support we can reach this vision!

What We Need

We are looking to raise $5,000 to be able to pay modest thank-you stipends to our post production crew through editing, color, sound, and music composition. Also so that we can apply to festivals both big and small and get our film into the world.
