Thame, Nepal Flood Relief
On August 16, 2024, a glacial lake situated above the remote Sherpa village of Thame burst its banks and sent a raging torrent of icy flood waters through the village, giving residents a matter of minutes to escape their homes and flee to uphill grounds for safety. Fortunately everyone survived, however nearly half of the village buildings were destroyed including homes, lodges, a school and health clinic.
Thame is situated at 3,800m/12,476' in a picturesque valley of the Upper Khumbu (Everest) region of Nepal. It is tucked away from the main Everest Base Camp trekking route and home to many famous Sherpa mountaineers, including Tenzing Norbu, the first Sherpa to successfully summit Everest. Mountain Kora groups have been staying in Thame over the years and have had the joy of feeling at home with our guiding team's extensive connections in the area.
Contributing to the Thame flood relief campaign will help ensure that this resilient community can recover and rebuild. By donating, you are directly supporting the Khumbu Rural Municipality, ensuring that resources are efficiently directed to those who need them most. Your generosity, whether large or small, will make a meaningful impact as Thame works to restore what was lost. Thank you for considering supporting this vital cause and standing with the people of Thame in their time of need.
