Wheelchair accessible playground equipment at Kingsgate Elementary: A new functional special education class is being established at Kingsgate in the 2024-2025 school year. This makes sure that these students have a safe and accessible place to play on day one!
Program Materials for the Leader In Me program at Apple Creek Elementary: This is an incredible program that develops leadership skills in elementary students and promotes whole-child learning. It is huge in building student confidence, personal responsibility, and respect among students.
A Book Vending Machine at Northmoor Elementary: This promotes literacy in an exciting and novel way at Northmoor. What kid wouldn't love getting a book from a vending machine? What is awesome about these funds is that they also allow these books to be replenished regularly allowing the books to be taken home by students to build their family libraries at home. Northmoor is a Title 1 school and many students do not have many (or any) books of their own at home.
Age-appropriate books about the Oklahoma City Bombing: Every elementary site across MPS will receive new and age-appropriate books about the Oklahoma City Bombing. It is important for our students to learn the history of our state, and while it is a dark moment in our history, it is valuable to our students to be exposed to these stories. These books include "The Survivor Tree" by Cheryl Somers Aubin and If the Fence Could Talk by Brad Robison. When the administrator receiving this grant placed the order for these books, Cheryl Somers Aubin took it upon herself to sign all copies of the book purchased and reached out to possibly do a book reading to commemorate the 30th anniversary.
Calming Corners at Winding Creek Elementary: This grant provides materials for calming corners for every classroom at Winding Creek. These are important spaces to allow students space, tools, and equipment to de-escalate when they are feeling overwhelmed in the classroom. This is valuable for both teachers and students because it decreases classroom disruptions and of course helps students feel safe.
Smart TVs for Whole Class Instruction at Southridge Junior High: This grant provided smart TVs to replace VERY outdated SmartBoards at Southridge Junior High. This helps group instruction time tremendously and brings ALL of their classrooms up to date with their instructional technology after a previous grant from an ed-tech foundation but it did not cover every room. Now all teachers and students have the same technology afforded to them.
Upgraded nurse's office equipment for Bryant Elementary: This provided a new exam table, portable cot, exam equipment (stethoscope, no-touch thermometers, etc.), and materials for Bryant Elementary. Changes in funding for school nurses is requiring one nurse to cover 3 sites instead of each site having its own nurse. Nurses will travel with most of their equipment, but this allows a safe and comfortable place for students to lay and baseline equipment for teachers to use if the nurse is not on site.
Upgrades to classroom book sets for all Junior High sites: New titles of classroom book sets have been provided to all Junior High sites that meet new standards for cultural studies, geography, social studies, and literacy per academic standards.
