For more than 80 years, Girls Inc., formerly the Schenectady Girls Club, has committed itself to helping young women build skills and capabilities for a responsible, confident, and self-sufficient adulthood. They have created an environment of support and safety for generations of women, empowering those young people to be the best version of themselves they can be. In collaboration with Leadership Capital Region Class of 2024, Girls Inc. will improve their facilities in practical and significant ways designed to directly impact and benefit the communities they serve. We are seeking support to fully renovate two spaces in the Girls Inc. Schenectady facility. 1). The Cozy Cove, a wellness room with a focus on introducing conversations on mental health for young women as young as age 6, will be a safe space for members to develop skills necessary for emotional regulation and stress management. Girls Inc. has committed to hiring an on-site Social Worker beginning Jan. 2025 to help their members master these skills. This project includes $7,500 which will allow Girls Inc. to hire an on-site social worker immediately, providing this important support nearly six months sooner than originally planned. The Cozy Cove itself will be updated with new paint and carpet, as well as new furniture to create a welcoming environment for these important conversations to take place. 2). The Teen Tech Room, a multi-functional high-tech room, will provide important resources for Girls Inc. members to work on academic projects, prepare college applications, participate in virtual interviews for internships and college admissions, and so much more. The facility will feature smart technology and new furnishings, creating a space in which these young women can compete in the modern world of academic and job seeking.
