Led by Dr. Benton Cook III, Dream Catchers CDC is a youth empowerment initiative rooted in a clear purpose: Empowering Youth, Enabling Prospects. The program helps young people climb above the challenges in front of them, recognize their worth, and step into leadership in their schools, families, and communities.

Many of the students who come to Dream Catchers live under labels that see them as problems rather than possibilities. The program speaks a different truth into their lives. It teaches them to see themselves as prospects, not suspects. It helps them understand that their choices, their voice, and their character have the power to change their future.

Through workshops, coaching, and hands-on experiences, Dream Catchers guides youth through real issues they face every day: identity, peer pressure, life purpose, responsibility, values, and the influence of home, school, and neighborhood environments.

A Step-by-Step Framework for Change

Dream Catchers operates through a powerful five-phase model that moves youth from confusion and pressure toward clarity, confidence, and purpose.

Recognize
Students begin by asking real questions: Who am I? Where am I going? What is my responsibility? They confront the influences that shape their lives and start to recognize their own value and potential.

Erase
Next, the program works to disrupt and erase harmful patterns: negative peer pressure, destructive advice, low self-esteem, and the environmental conditions that push youth toward dangerous choices, including drugs and risky behavior.

Replace
In this phase, youth learn new skills and mindsets. They are introduced to career awareness, critical thinking, conflict resolution, anger management, and positive life skills that support successful living.

Mentorship
Students are connected to mentors in business, politics, and community leadership. They visit vocational schools, learn how to complete job applications, and practice employment interview skills. They see living examples of what is possible.

Follow-Up
Each student is evaluated and supported through ongoing reflection and reporting, ensuring that growth is tracked and reinforced, not left to chance.

Real Skills for Real Life

Dream Catchers is not a single assembly or a one-time event. It is a year-long investment broken into meaningful sessions for three age groups: 8–12, 13–17, and 18–24. Youth attend classes in life skills, career development, and conflict resolution, learning principles such as:

Peaceful conflict resolution: “Back Off, Before Fire”
Life skills: “Choices Now, Follow Me The Rest of My Life”
Communication: “How I Say It, Affects How I Am Heard”
Social norms and attire: “Dress as a Prospect, Not a Suspect”

Students also explore entrepreneurship, learning how to start and run a business, develop functioning business models, and maintain their own ventures with the support of mentors. Media and technology are woven in through projects like 2 HIP-TV, a student-produced news and documentary program, and web design training that teaches youth how to use the internet as a tool for information and innovation. Athletic opportunities are tied to academic performance and overall participation, reinforcing accountability and balance.

Healing Trauma and Expanding Horizons

Dream Catchers recognizes a difficult reality: many urban youth are living with symptoms of trauma. The program addresses this head-on by providing counseling for students who may be experiencing post-traumatic stress and socialization challenges, helping them process what they have been through and build healthier ways of coping.

Youth also participate in City Kidz / Country Kidz, a program that brings students from the city to the Dream Catchers ranch, Sankofa Village, in Pembroke, Illinois. There, they experience a rural environment that expands their view of the world and shows them a life beyond the limits of their zip code.
