The Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra (NGSO) is one of Ohio’s oldest symphonies, dating back to 1939. Today, NGSO is a thriving professional orchestra dedicated to musical excellence, education, and community engagement under the direction of Dr. Russel C. Mikkelson.

Our Community Offerings

NGSO is deeply committed to bringing music to audiences of all ages through innovative programs and performances. Our annual A Very Merry Holiday Pops concert is a cherished tradition, bringing the community together to celebrate the season. The Tunes & Tales series at the Licking County Library combines live music with storytelling, engaging young listeners in an interactive and creative way. Additionally, we present two FREE Family Concerts each year, making orchestral music accessible to all.

Through our Overture Project, we provide instruments and private lessons to students in financial need, ensuring that young musicians have the opportunity to develop their talents. There are two student orchestras, The Music 4U! Chamber Music Series brings small ensemble performances to intimate venues, offering audiences a closer connection to the musicians and their artistry. During the summer, our chamber music series at the Robbins Hunter Museum creates unique concert experiences in a historic setting.

Our Professional Symphony

NGSO’s professional musicians present a full concert season featuring masterworks and contemporary compositions, often collaborating with renowned guest artists. Our performances blend symphonic excellence with creative programming, such as multimedia presentations and cross-disciplinary collaborations, enriching the concert experience. NGSO also supports the next generation of musicians through the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony and Chamber Strings, providing talented students with advanced training and performance opportunities.
