Story

An Urban Oasis. This is how Monk Botanical Gardens has been described by community members. Nestled in the north end of Wausau, the Gardens is the first and only botanical garden in Central Wisconsin. In 2004, Robert W. Monk, a local realtor and community leader, donated 19 acres to be developed as a botanical garden that would be committed to providing the Wausau community with a beautiful and serene green space, educational engagement, and a celebration of our connection with the natural environment. Since then a group of committed volunteers has worked tirelessly to make Mr. Monk’s vision a reality.

Today at Monk Botanical Gardens you will find a multitude of established gardens perfect for strolling through on a warm spring day. Our gardens include a Memorial, Wildflower Woods, and a Meditation garden. Want to find a place where your children can run, play, and learn? Bring them to our accessible Treehouse for an afternoon reading, or walk through our kitchen demonstration garden and learn how to grow vegetables and herbs. Looking for the perfect spot to have a family gathering? Our Kitchen potager has everything you need including an outdoor brick oven, stovetop, and picnic tables. Our trail system will provide plenty of walking space for you, your dog, or your family.

The 30 acres of natural and developing space at the Monk Botanical Gardens offers a little something for everyone. You’ll be amazed as you discover this hidden treasure nestled alongside the bustling streets of Wausau, WI. The Gardens truly is an ever-changing, inspirational experience where you can lose yourself in the beauty of nature.
