Who We Are:

Norristown Page Turners was founded in 2024 by Kate Jaworski and Angela Smith. As literacy leaders and educators, we are passionate about helping our community by increasing access to books and offering out of school literacy programming for kids and teens.

What We Do:

Book Giveaways - We hand out hundreds of free books to kids at community events year-round

Middle School Book Clubs - We offer after school book clubs at each Norristown middle school

High School Book Clubs - We meet on Saturdays at the bookstore to connect with friends and discuss books

High School Summer Program - We offer a summer book club for teens that includes local service learning projects

Why We Do It:

Norristown is a book desert, defined as a high-poverty area that lacks basic access to age-appropriate books, high-quality reading materials, and book culture. With poverty rates above the national average and literacy scores the lowest in the county, Norristown youth deserve better.

From the U.S. Department of Education: While less than 15% of students with between 0 and 10 books at home scored proficient in state literacy assessments in 2015, 50% of students with more than 100 books at home scored proficient

The data and research are clear – children who have access to print reading materials have better literacy outcomes.
