North Star Academy is committed to providing students with opportunities to serve others through authentic and relevant community service projects. Currently, today's youth is in a mental health crisis. Only 22% of children ages 10-24 are receiving the care they need to support their mental health. It is our commitment as educators, parents, and adults to help provide our youth with the skills and tools they need to improve their mental health and self-worth.

North Star Academy’s 4th-quarter service project is Movement for Mental Health, a 5K or 1-mile run or walk on May 13, to promote mental health through exercise. All of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Still I Run, the country's only non-profit running community working to promote the benefits of running for mental health. Still I Run is working hard to defeat the stigma around mental health, raise awareness of the topic, and help others get started on their running journey.

Why running and walking? Research shows that exercise releases feel-good chemicals, called endorphins, into the brain. Even a short burst of ten minutes of brisk walking can improve mental alertness, energy, and mood. Whether it's tending a garden or running a marathon, exercise can significantly improve your quality of life. We hope this event will help students learn the importance of physical health that will carry over to their mental well-being, as well as supporting an amazing charity!
