Mirrors & Windows
READ is committed to offering *mirror and window* books (Rudine Sims Bishop, 1990) in all its programming. Mirror and window books allow children the opportunity:
* to see themselves, promoting affirmation and embracing their humanity;
* to see similarities, building connectedness through mutual experiences; and,
* to see differences, offering awareness and understanding, which leads to respect and empathy.
By denying access to certain books due to the possibility of discomfort or disagreement in some capacity, we erase lived experiences and the humanity of some children. No child should feel invisible and alone. READ continues to talk with families and community members about not only the need for diverse and inclusive books now more than ever, but also the need to actively engage with these culturally relevant titles and showcasing their value for ALL readers in the home, school, and community.
Support READ’s efforts in making sure no stories are silenced.
