We are Juliet and the East, a “queer storytelling rock cabaret” from Portland, OR. With influences spanning punk to j-pop to country prog, we’ve been making a splash in the Portland music scene since spring 2023. Led by bassist and songwriter Juliet Terrill, JATE tells stories experienced by many in the queer community through a whimsical lens.

Our newest project, “Action Princess”, is the soundtrack to your next favorite queer-magical-girl-love-story-cartoon show. We would LOVE to eventually turn "Action Princess" into an actual animated mini series (animators - hit us up!), but for now, we recorded a full length album guiding you through the saga of "Action Princess" and her team; we commissioned a manga-style lyric zine by Ren Strapp; and we’re performing the whole thing live for YOU at our...

"Action Princess" Album Release Show - August 16th at The Hallowed Halls!

"Action Princess" follows the side characters from a magical girl cartoon (think: punky She-Ra or Sailor Moon). Action Princess (played by violinist Isabel Dammann) is the princess squad's headstrong and impetuous brawler; Hope (played by drummer Kynwyn Sterling) is the group's healer and AP's secret love interest; and Leona is the leader of the team (but not a main character in "Action Princess"). Also featured is The Villain (played by bassist and songwriter Juliet Terrill); The Monster (played by guitarist Joseph Mammarella) who the princesses have to battle in the song "Evil Schemes and Laserbeams" (see our Tiny Desk Contest submission!); and The Narrator (played by keyboardist JonLuc Hefferman), who fills in storyline tidbits between songs.

Juliet began dreaming of “Action Princess” in 2022 as an all-ages queer story that is not censored by big media companies, and we are incredibly proud of the work we've done so far. This is just the beginning of the world of "Action Princess", and as with any creative endeavor, it is not cheap to make a reality! Here's a financial breakdown of our costs so far:
