For 20 years Academia de Baile Tradicion y Cultura has shared the rich cultural history of traditional Mexican folklorico and Spanish flamenco with dancers of all ages and a place where they have fallen in love with this art.
One of the special things about Academia is that its students often return as high school and college students to teach dance, and where many former students like myself bring our children to continue the tradition.
But this studio is much more than a place to learn and perfect dance technique. It's a place were lifelong memories and friendships are formed.
Academia has given so much to our community and dance families. They have equipped our children with a sense of pride in their culture, self-confidence and a welcoming and caring environment to express themselves through dance.
Like so many local non-profits, Academia de Baile has endured untold financial impacts as a result of COVID-19. And it needs our help, now more than ever.
In order to ensure the health and safety of its students and staff, the studio ceased all in-person classes earlier this year, but of course operating expenses like rent, utilities, and labor for virtual instruction continued to mount. Academia also lost a significant amount of income from annual fundraising efforts that had to be cut short or not happen at all.
The studio is a reflection of our community; its tuition rates accessible so that everyday families like mine can take part. The studio’s scholarship program has even helped countless families who fell on hard times or who couldn't afford tuition.
The Academia team has been there for so many of its families to celebrate their most joyful milestones: quincenearas, graduations, weddings and it has showered families with love and support during their most devasting moments. And now, the studio has fallen on hard times, and needs our help.
This organization gives much to those who are folded within the Academia family. I am asking all of you touched by the Academia ‘magic’ to help me give back and ensure the longevity and success of this studio. And like our big, annual recital, we will make this happen the way we always do: Together.
