Another year has flown by which means it’s time again to start preparing and training for our annual Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim Grand Canyon 50-mile hike in late September.
On September 26th and 27th 2024 members of the JH MS Center (Moira Baynes, Peter Calabresi, and lab members) will join The Climb for Hope team for the Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim charity hike event. Climb for Hope is a nonprofit organization founded by Baltimore native Andy Buerger to raise money and awareness for MS and breast cancer research. Our goal is to raise funds to help support research in MS so that we can find treatments to repair damaged myelin and nerves and restore function to people with MS.
As many of you know, MS is an incurable neurological condition that affects close to a million people in the US. It affects the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, causing irreversible cognitive and physical disability over time. Although great progress has been made with developing MS therapies over recent years, these are largely for the relapsing remitting form of MS. No treatments exist to repair damaged myelin on nerves or arrest the progressive form of the disease, which eventually causes many people to become disabled and unable to work or care for themselves.
At the JH MS Center, we see many people whose lives have been changed forever by this disease. We see individuals who are no longer able to work or care for themselves and individuals who cannot walk, run, or play with their kids or participate in family gatherings- the list is endless. This disease affects not just individuals with MS but also their families and friends.
The JH MS Center research team in Dr. Peter Calabresi’ s research laboratory is focused on finding a treatment to repair the myelin and restore function of damaged nerves to help people with MS regain function. We have several exciting projects that need support so our mission is to raise money from the Climb for Hope Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim charity event to get these projects underway. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for MS research.
